You’ve been waiting and waiting for your parcel to arrive only to receive the dreaded notification that your parcel is being held in customs. Not only is this incredibly frustrating, it’s also a bit overwhelming – like many people, you might not know what you need to do! So, what does it mean if you need clearance for your parcel and (more importantly) how do you go about getting it cleared?

Reasons for parcel delays:

You’ve received your note from Australia Post saying you need postal customs clearance. Now what? Firstly, don’t contact Australia Post directly – they have no say in what customs decide to do with your parcel and won’t be able to give you an accurate timeline as to when it’s released. The main reasons that a parcel will be held are that customs want to inspect the item further or that you need to pay import duty.

In most cases, all that customs will want is confirmation that the contents of the parcel have a value of below $1,000 so you don’t have to pay duty, taxes or charges. This case, you’ll need to provide evidence of a receipt. If your parcel has a value of more than $1,000, you’ll be sent a First Notice by Australia Post letting you know that you need to lodge an Import Declaration to assess whether you need to pay duty or taxes. Your items can’t be delivered until the declaration is complete and the duty or taxes are paid in full. In some cases, your parcel might be held because it contains restricted goods and you’ll need to be able to produce a permit which permits you to import the items before it can be cleared.

Enlist the help of a postal customs broker:

When you receive your notice letting you know that you have a parcel stuck in customs, it’s a good idea to speak with a customs broker as soon as possible. They can offer you professional advice on the best course of action and can also organise any customs declarations and fees for your parcel so it can be released. All your broker will need is a copy of the letter from Australia Post, the invoice for your goods and an authorisation form so they can act on your behalf. It couldn’t be easier – just remember that the sooner you contact a broker, the better.
